5 Powerful Tips for Black Women to stay in Control Amid Chaos

5 Ways to Stay in Control When Life Feels Chaotic

If the world feels like it's spinning out of control, you're not alone. It seems like every time you check in with friends, family, or the news, there’s some fresh chaos unfolding. But here’s the thing—you don’t have to get swept up in it. Just because everything feels out of control doesn’t mean you have to be out of control. You can protect your peace.

So, grab a cup of chamomile tea, take a deep breath, and let’s talk about five ways you can stay grounded when everything around you feels like it’s on fire. 🔥

1. Set Boundaries—Guard Your Gates

Listen, if you want to protect your energy, you have to set boundaries. That means being mindful of what you’re allowing into your space—visually, mentally, and emotionally.

🔹 Guard Your Eye Gate: What are you watching? Are you doom-scrolling through social media or binge-watching news cycles that only add to your stress? Be intentional about the content you consume.

🔹 Guard Your Ear Gate: Who are you listening to? Are conversations with friends or family leaving you feeling drained and anxious? It’s okay to step back from constant negativity, even if it’s coming from people you love.

🔹 Guard Your Mouth Gate: What are you speaking into existence? Words have power, and constantly talking about how bad things are will only reinforce that negativity in your mind. Be mindful of your own narrative.

It’s not about ignoring reality—it’s about making sure you’re not adding unnecessary stress to your plate. Because if we tell the truth and shame the devil—you already have enough going on.

2. Check Your Mindset—Your Thoughts Shape Your Reality

Ever heard of the cognitive triangle? It’s the idea that your thoughts affect your feelings, and your feelings affect your actions. Meaning, if you’re constantly thinking worst-case scenario, you’re going to feel anxious and start acting from that place of fear.

Ask yourself:
✅ Am I focusing only on the negative?
✅ Am I allowing distractions to control my emotions?
✅ How can I shift my perspective toward solutions instead of problems?

If your mindset is slipping into negativity, find a community or support system that will help you stay grounded like the Girl, Heal Yourself! group coaching cohort. Surround yourself with people who encourage optimism, resilience, and forward movement. Because if you keep hanging around people who are spiraling, you’re going to spiral too.

3. Stop Catastrophizing—The Sky Is Not Falling

It’s easy to take bad news and run with it—straight to the worst possible outcome. But here’s the truth:

👉🏾 Most of the time, things don’t end up as bad as our minds tell us they will.

Before you let your thoughts spiral into a full-blown disaster movie, pause and reframe:

  • What’s another possible (less dramatic) outcome?

  • How have you overcome challenges before?

  • Is this situation actually as urgent as it feels?

You have power over your perspective. Instead of assuming the worst, start imagining the best-case scenario—you might be surprised at what happens when you do.

4. Lean Into Challenges—Avoidance Makes Things Worse

When life gets overwhelming, the temptation is to avoid dealing with problems. But avoiding challenges doesn’t make them disappear—it just adds to your stress.

Instead of running from the hard stuff:
💡 Acknowledge what’s happening.
💡 Make a plan for how to handle it.
💡 Seek support if you need it.

The sooner you face the challenge, the sooner you’ll move through it. And who knows? That thing you’ve been dreading might actually be the push you needed toward something greater.

5. Schedule Your Worry Time—Yes, Really

Look, I know it’s unrealistic to tell you to just stop worrying. So instead, try giving yourself a set time each day to worry—and then let it go.

⏳ Set a timer for five minutes.
😩 Let yourself think about whatever’s stressing you out.
🛑 When the timer goes off, that’s it—no more worry for the day.

This might sound strange, but trust—it works. Instead of carrying stress with you 24/7, you give it a designated space and then move forward.

Final Thoughts: Stay in Control of Your Energy

At the end of the day, you can’t control the chaos happening in the world. But you can control how you respond to it. Protecting your peace is not a luxury—it’s a necessity for your health and well-being.
